Extractions & Site Preservation
Extractions & Site Preservation
When a tooth cannot be saved, we plan its removal, your comfort, and any future replacement together.
Request a ConsultationCan the tooth be saved?
We examine the tooth and review relevant imaging to understand whether it can be treated. If removal is recommended, we explain why and discuss the alternatives.
The bone and gum can change after a tooth is removed. Planning ahead allows us to consider a socket graft, a temporary tooth, and the timing of any implant.
Decisions we make together.
-
Removing the tooth
The approach is chosen to preserve the surrounding tissue as much as possible.
-
Preserving the site
A socket graft may help maintain the shape of the ridge while it heals.
-
Replacing the tooth
We discuss temporary and longer-term options with you and your restorative dentist.
Before, during, and after extraction.
- 01
Examine the tooth
We explain the findings and whether treatment to retain it is reasonable.
- 02
Plan the next steps
We discuss grafting, replacement, timing, and anesthesia before the extraction.
- 03
Remove the tooth
The tooth is removed and the site is treated according to the agreed plan.
- 04
Check healing
We review your recovery and assess when the site is ready for further treatment.
Looking after the area at home.
You will receive written instructions for managing bleeding, discomfort, cleaning, food, and activity. Follow the instructions for your procedure and contact us if you are unsure about any part of your recovery.
The time away from work and the healing period depend on the tooth, the surgery, and any grafting. We discuss these with you before your appointment.
Extraction FAQ
Extraction questions.
How is PRF used during extraction and ridge preservation?
We often use platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), prepared from a small sample of your blood, to support healing after extraction. It may also reduce discomfort during early recovery. When a socket graft is planned to preserve the ridge, PRF may be used alongside it. We explain whether it would be helpful for your procedure.
Do I always need a socket graft?
No. We consider the condition of the site, your plans for replacing the tooth, and the likely benefit of grafting.
Can an implant be placed at the same appointment?
Sometimes. The condition of the socket and the stability available for the implant help determine whether immediate placement is appropriate.
Will there be a visible gap?
For a visible tooth, we discuss temporary replacement options before treatment and coordinate them with your dentist.
Can I get a second opinion before removal?
Yes. Bring any radiographs and the treatment plan you have received. We will assess the tooth and explain whether it may be possible to retain it.
