Salivary & Microbial Diagnostics

A saliva test can identify bacteria present in your mouth. We use it selectively, when the result could help guide gum disease treatment.

When testing may help.

An examination, gum measurements, and radiographs provide the basis for periodontal diagnosis. Laboratory testing may add information when disease has not responded as expected or when the findings need further investigation.

We use Bristle to assess the oral microbiome. Its report describes bacteria in a saliva sample. We interpret the findings in the context of your gum health and medical history.

Will the result help guide care?

  • Response to care

Persistent inflammation after treatment may prompt further investigation.

  • Your clinical history

We look at how quickly the disease has progressed and whether it has returned after treatment.

  • Treatment decisions

We order a test when its findings could change a treatment decision.

  • Follow-up

A later test may help us compare results if inflammation persists or returns.

The report is one part of your assessment.

A bacterial result needs clinical interpretation. Gum measurements, bleeding, imaging, and your response to treatment remain important when evaluating your health.

Bristle lists a usual turnaround of two to three weeks after the laboratory receives your sample. The office can confirm the expected timing when arranging your test.

Diagnostics FAQ

Questions about saliva testing.

Does everyone need a test?

No. A test is most useful when its results could affect a treatment decision.

How is the sample collected?

Bristle uses a saliva sample collected by spitting into a tube. Follow the instructions supplied with the kit, including preparation and return shipping.

Will the result mean I need antibiotics?

Not automatically. The decision depends on the clinical findings and the overall treatment plan. We will explain any proposed medication.

Is it covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. We explain the cost before a sample is collected and can help you check your benefits.
