Consultation guide

Questions to bring
to your consultation.

You don’t have to remember everything on the spot. Bring the questions that matter to you, and make room for your own.

A consultation is a chance to understand what is happening and decide what to do next. It can help to write down your main concern before you arrive, especially if you are weighing several options or seeking a second opinion.

  1. What have you found?

Ask your periodontist to show you the area they are concerned about and explain the examination findings. If a scan or gum measurement is part of the discussion, ask what it tells them about your teeth, gums, or bone.

  2. What are my options?

Ask which approaches are reasonable for your situation and why one is recommended. If you are wondering whether an area could be monitored, a tooth could be kept, or another treatment could help, bring that up.

  3. What could treatment achieve?

Discuss the expected benefit and the limits of the proposed treatment. Ask which parts of the outcome are more predictable and which depend on your starting condition or healing.

  4. How will the appointments fit together?

Find out how many stages are expected, what needs to happen between them, and which visits will be with your regular dentist. Mention travel plans or other commitments that could affect scheduling.

  5. What should I plan for afterward?

Ask about time away from work, eating, cleaning the area, exercise, and follow-up visits. If you may need a ride home or someone to stay with you, clarify that before the appointment. Your instructions should match the procedure and anesthesia planned for you.

  6. How will you help me feel comfortable?

Tell the team if you are anxious or have had a difficult dental experience. Ask how the area will be numbed, whether sedation is an option, and what the preparation would involve. Bring your medication list and discuss your medical history.

  7. What is included in the estimate?

Ask for a written breakdown and clarify whether any part of treatment will be billed by another office. Discuss insurance questions, payment timing, and any costs that could change if the plan changes.

  8. What happens after treatment?

Ask how healing will be checked, what ongoing visits are recommended, and who will provide them. Before you leave, make sure you know whom to contact with a question or concern.
